I am what I like to call boujee on a budget. I like what I like, which much of the time happens to be items that come from higher priced brands and companies because quality matters. However, and this is a BIG however, you'll be hard pressed to find me paying full price for ANYTHING.
If there's a clearance rack, I'm shopping it. If there's a sale, I'm at the store. If there's a coupon, I'm using it. I'm a rewards member for every store and restaurant I can think of and I've signed up for every company's email list just for the discounts, free shipping codes, and bonus items.
I've also found several ways to get cash back or gift cards on a very regular basis that allows me to have bonus spending money and treat myself to rewards here and there. That means I get to shop at the places I like and treat myself without spending money out of pocket, and I'm all about that life. Want to know how I do it? Read on.
Ibotta is an app that allows you to get cash back for items you already buy when doing grocery and household shopping. After your shopping trip. After a shopping trip, select the store you visited and scroll through available offers. Select any of the items you purchased, upload your receipt (or store loyalty card) and earn cash back on that item. There’s also cash back offers for online shopping and in-store shopping with certain clothing retailers. It’s quite easy to earn if you shop consistently.
I typically spend about $350 a month in groceries & household items and generally earn about $15-$40 cash back each month from this app depending on the available offers and what I buy. During the holidays (Thanksgiving & Christmas) that number jumps to about $50-$75 cash back.
Once you hit at least $20 you can withdraw cash directly to your PayPal or Venmo account, or you can redeem for gift cards from retailers like Amazon, Bath & Body Works, Panera, and Regal Cinemas (among others). For $25 you can redeem for gift cards from retailers like Target, TJ Maxx, Uber, Ulta, and Walmart (among others). Or you can let your rewards dollars pile up and cash in for larger cash or gift card amounts.

Fetch Rewards is an app I've only used for about two months, but I've already earned a $10 Amazon gift card so I'm sticking with it. Upload any grocery receipt and earn fetch points which convert into dollars. You earn points for every receipt, with bonuses when you buy products from certain brands like Kraft, Planters, Talenti, Dove, St. Ives, and nearly 200 other brands.
It takes at least 10,000 points to earn $10 in gift cards to retailers like Amazon, Marshalls, Sephora (among others). Some retailers offer gift cards for just 3000 points which would equate to a $3 gift card. Or you can save your points to redeem for larger gift card amounts and even get yourself $25/$50 Visa or MasterCard gift cards, $25/$50 Airbnb gift cards, and $25/$50 Spafinder Wellness 365 or Spa & Wellness by Spa Week gift cards (among others).
10,000 points may seem like a lot, but you'd be surprised to see how quickly points add up, especially if you're buying the specialty brands this app partners with (the app fully lists all 189 brands that earn bonus points among grocery, household, beauty, and personal items).
Enter my referral code, Q3NQX at the sign-up screen and you'll get 2,000 Fetch Points ($2.00 in points!) when you complete one receipt. Download here https://bit.ly/2Ay6caM
Receipt Hog is another receipt app that I use to earn cash back. Simply upload pictures of any receipt, and I mean ANY receipt- restaurants, grocery stores, gas stations, clothing stores, home improvement stores, seriously wherever you shop. Those receipts are then converted into "slots" which are spins you can use to earn coins. Those coins can then be redeemed for cash, gift cards, or goods. Connecting your Amazon account and your email address earns you additional coins monthly which helps you reach your target quicker.
You can earn $5, $15, $25 or $40 in a PayPal cash back, a Visa gift card, or an Amazon gift card.
It takes a bit longer to earn rewards using this app, but I can generally earn $15 cash back via PayPal in two months. Add a month for each additional increment.
To download the app, go to your app store and search Receipt Hog.
These are just 3 real ways I use apps in my everyday life to get free cash and gift cards. It's a great way to still treat myself to things I like without overspending my personal finances.
